Objective
To improve the food security and nutrition and strengthen the resilience of vulnerable populations (displaced and host communities) affected by multiple shocks and crises.
Activities implemented
-
Established two 1-ha production sites with four 300-m² market gardening greenhouses equipped with boreholes, solar pumping equipment and ancillary structures, benefiting 212 households.
-
Organized nutrition education sessions and cooking demonstrations, benefiting 188 women.
-
Distributed vegetable production inputs to 200 female-headed households, namely 15 000 kg of organic fertilizers; amaranth (2 kg), cabbage (0.8 kg), okra (30 kg) and onion (8 kg) seeds; and tools (240 watering cans and 240 hoes).
-
Established 45 ha of lowlands and distributed 1 600 kg of rice seed and 12 000 kg of fertilizers to 160 households.
-
Provided technical advice and held two workshops on the use of biofertilizers, benefiting the rice producers.
-
Conducted a study to improve the development of rice production sites, assessing technical and socioeconomic feasibility in identified areas.
-
Trained 75 project participants on the establishment and management of fruit tree nurseries, and planted 1 500 fruit trees (baobab, guava, mango and moringa).
-
Organized a workshop on how to manage climate risks in agriculture using the Participatory Integrated Climate Services for Agriculture approach, benefiting 21 producers.
-
Trained ten producers and three supervisory staff from the project’s intervention municipalities on animal feed resources and crop residue management.
-
Trained 175 producers in the production of quality compost and its effective use.
-
Trained community leaders on the legislation governing access to natural resources and raised awareness among beneficiary communities about good environmental and social practices during project implementation, as well as about sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity conservation.
Results
-
Enabled households to produce 90 tonnes of vegetables worth around USD 56 000 and 140 tonnes of rice paddy, enough to cover the needs of 2 100 people for six months. Of the rice paddy produced, 1 800 kg were set aside for the following planting season.
-
Strengthened the technical capacities of participating farming households on improved management practices (crop establishment, efficient use of fertilizers, etc.) thanks to the various trainings carried out.
-
Contributed to enhancing social cohesion and reducing tensions related to access to natural resources.
