Affected populations in the Central Sahel continue to face violence, conflict, and insecurity. This has resulted in an increase in security incidents, with 619 recorded in October-December 2024, compared to 569 in August-September. Meanwhile, the number of deaths decreased from 1,946 in August-September 2024 to 1,526 in October-December. There are currently 2.6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, a decrease of 3 per cent from September 2024. Meanwhile, the number of refugees in the three countries has increased by 3 per cent to a total of 329,500.
Displaced and vulnerable people in the Central Sahel face severe food insecurity and malnutrition, and have limited access to basic services. Thanks to donors, US$997 million has been received to date, representing 43 per cent of the funding needed to support 9 million people. However, the needs remain considerable.
