People in the Central Sahel continue to face violence, conflict, and insecurity. However, the number of security incidents reported decreased by 11 per cent in 2024 (3,446) compared to 4,195 in 2023.
Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger continue to host a significant number of refugees. In December 2024, these countries hosted 334,847 refugees, an increase of 43 per cent compared to December 2023,
and a 2 per cent increase in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs), reaching 2.7 million. Mali alone hosted 50 per cent more refugees, rising from 66,722 in December 2023 to 135,851 in
December 2024. The persistence of conflicts has led to a rise in the number of deaths. Notably, in Niger, 1,392 people were killed, marking an increase of 39 per cent compared to 2023. The number of
humanitarian actors operating in the region increased from 250 to 310. Considering growing humanitarian needs, these actors provided assistance to 4.2 million people with a total of $1.04 billion in
2024 as of 3 March 2025. However, humanitarian access remains a constraint for both humanitarian actors and affected people.
