The Central Sahel remains an epicentre of crisis, with multiple interlinked drivers exacerbating a complex and multi-faceted cross-border crisis. As of April 2025, there were a total of 2.7 million
internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the region, including 2.1 million in Burkina Faso alone. Meanwhile, the number of refugees in the region has increased by 14 per cent since January 2025,
reaching 387,000 — most of them having fled from Burkina Faso to Mali and Niger.

From January to April 2025, 1,390 security incidents were recorded, resulting in 3,546 deaths. Due to the difficult operating context, the number of humanitarian organizations working in the region dropped from 310 at the end of 2024 to 269. As of 10 June, these organizations had received US$240 million, representing only 11 per cent of the funds needed to implement their 2025 response plans. During the same period, just 1.2 million out of the 8.4 million people targeted had received humanitarian assistance.
