Burkina Faso – Killing of civilians, forced displacements (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 19 July 2023)

  • On 18 July 2023, Oualou, a locality in the Tcheriba commune, Boucle du Mouhoun region, was attacked by a non-state armed group (NSAG). The reported toll is of at least 10 civilians killed, significant material damages and the theft of goods and food. Previously, the civilian population in this village had been ordered by this NSAG to move to the nearby commune of Tcheriba. Other displacements took place in the same region where, from Thursday 13 to Friday 14 July 2023, about 1500 inhabitants of the village of Saoura in the commune of Yé, province of Nayala, moved as a preventive measure to the cities of Yé, Toma and Dédougou.
  • Other deadly attacks were reported on 18 July, including in Tondoura near the border with Ivory Coast.
  • These population displacements increase the needs for shelters, wash and education services while the rapid response in these sectors is already facing major funding gaps. To date, 89% of the needs for shelters and non-food items are unmet.
