The humanitarian situation remained dire throughout May. A high number of displacements had been noticed in different regions: in Hauts-Bassins (4 492 nouvelles personnes déplacées ), Centre-Nord (40 796 newly displaced persons), and Nord (2 537 newly displaced persons). According to the Ministre de l’Action humanitaire, the new IDPs require urgent assistance in terms of food, shelter, essential household items, drinking water, and healthcare. On the other hand, the Cadre harmonisé, the Sahel Food Security harmonized framework, projected more than 42,000 people could find themselves in a famine situation between June and August 2023.

The mobilization of donors and humanitarian partners remains crucial to meeting the needs of the country's most vulnerable people, especially as the UN has placed Burkina Faso among other countries on maximum alert for world hunger. For the month of May, 141 tonnes of food and non-food items (shelter, medicines, water, hygiene, and sanitation materials) were delivered by helicopter to hard-to-reach areas such as Djibo, Pama, Arbinda, and Titao. Improvement of access by land in all areas of the country will enable populations in need to have equitable access to humanitarian and essential assistance, including health and protection.

As of May 31, 2023, UNHCR counted 63,744 Burkinabè who had crossed the border to seek refuge in neighboring countries (27,794 in Mali, 18,658 in Togo, 12,775 in Côte d'Ivoire, 3,220 in Ghana and 1,297 in Benin).
