Sofia/Bucharest (dpa) - A state of emergency was declared in wide areas of northeast Bulgaria where thousands of homes were damaged in weekend storms and floods, the government in Sofia said Tuesday.
Dozens of villages were without electricity and running water and more than 4,400 private and public buildings were flooded. Swollen rivers and mudslides destroyed or damaged 52 bridges and disrupted railway lines.
Five people died in the storms and floods in Bulgaria. The situation was similar to the north, in Romania, where the government said 2,000 homes were damaged or destroyed and four people killed. dpa el bb pmc
