Brazil Welcomes Afghan Refugees through New Community Sponsorship Program
On 21 February, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security officially signed a partnership with Panahgah, making it the first accredited community sponsor in the Brazilian Humanitarian Reception Program for Afghans. According to the new rules for issuing humanitarian visas to Afghans, visa requests must be supported by a community sponsor in Brazil. Panahgah will support 500 Afghan refugees relocating to Brazil in 2025, with 50 identified and referred by UNHCR based on protection needs and vulnerabilities, adhering to UNHCR's resettlement criteria. The remaining refugees will be nominated by Panahgah. Arrivals of refugees sponsored by Panahgah are expected to begin in the coming weeks. Additionally, eight other organizations have submitted proposals, which are currently under review by the Federal Government
