International Women's Day: Empowering Refugee Women
UNHCR routinely conducts activities to empower refugee women. Below are highlighted activities in recognition of International Women's Day.
UNHCR, Hermanitos, UNFPA, and AVSI Brasil celebrated International Women's Day at the Sustainability Center with 13 women and girls from Operation Welcome. The event featured discussions on equality between women and men, women's empowerment, community engagement and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 10th edition of the Empowering Refugees project graduated its first class in Boa Vista. Eighteen women completed the customer service and sales course run by the National Commercial Training Service (SENAC) and will be referred to job opportunities in Roraima or through voluntary relocation.
UNHCR supported the 3rd year of the 8M Flight, an International Women's Day commemorative flight by Operation Welcome. Forty women heads of household traveled to Paraná for employment with GT Foods company. UNHCR facilitated this voluntary relocation by attracting vacancies, providing support for rental, food and travel bags and organizing an event with lectures on protection of women and girls from violence and labour exploitation.
Tomorrow, on 15 March, the Centro de Referência e Cidadania da Mulher (CRCM) and UNHCR will host “Ação Refúgio Mulher” in São Paulo's Capela do Socorro neighbourhood to raise awareness about women's rights and municipal services. UNHCR partnered with Uber to provide transportation for women in vulnerable situations. CRCM will introduce its services, and a focus group discussion will allow refugee and migrant women to share their experiences and concerns.
