UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos will visit Brazil from 19 to 20 August 2013 to participate in events marking World Humanitarian Day.

This year, World Humanitarian Day marks the tenth anniversary of the attack on United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, which killed 22 UN and aid agency workers, including the then Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq, Brazilian national Sérgio Vieira de Mello. On 19 August USG Amos will take part in a series of events led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, to commemorate and celebrate Sérgio Vieira de Mello’s humanitarian legacy and raise awareness of contemporary humanitarian issues in Brazil.

On 20 August Ms. Amos is scheduled to visit Brazil’s Peacekeeping Training Centre to discuss collaboration on humanitarian civil-military training. She will also speak to students and staff at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro on issues related to the challenges and trends in humanitarian affairs today.
