Heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms continued to affect the Minas Gerais state, south-eastern Brazil since the beginning of the rainy season (late September 2024), with an increase during the first weeks of 2025, causing floods, landslides, and several severe weather-related incidents, mainly due to the strong wind that have resulted in casualties and damage.
The Civil Protection of Minas Gerais state reports, as of 3 February, 26 fatalities, where the worst affected is the Ipatinga municipality with ten fatalities. In addition, the same source also reports more than 400 evacuated people in a numbers of temporary shelters, and nearly 3,700 displaced people across 141 municipality throughout the state.
Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over the western Minas Gerais state.
