Brazil - Severe weather, update (media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 08 September 2023)

  • Following the heavy rainfall, strong winds and hailstorms that are affecting the Rio Grande do Sul State, southernmost State of Brazil, causing floods and several severe weather-related incidents, casualties and damage are still increasing.
  • According to media, as of 8 September, at least 41 fatalities are reported across Muçum, Roca Sales and Cruzeiro do Sul Municipalities, and 25 people are still missing. More than 10,500 people have been displaced in 83 municipalities, bridges and roads have been partially or fully blocked in the area.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over the whole Rio Grande do Sul State.
