Since the last week of April 2024, Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil has faced unprecedented heavy rainfall and extreme weather conditions. The ensuing floods devastated the entire region, affecting nearly 90 per cent of the state. Entire neighborhoods were flooded out and roads, communications networks and water systems were severely damaged.
Overall, nearly 2.4 million people have been affected by the floods, and 173 people reported killed. Approximately 200,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed, displacing more than 580,000 people.
According to Brazilian Migration Registration System, over 43,000 refugees and people in need of international protection live in Rio Grande do Sul, mostly from Venezuela and Haiti. Many of them live in areas heavily affected by the floods. Moreover, around 35,000 of them are registered in the state database as people in a situation of vulnerability
