Since 30 April, heavy rainfall has been affecting north-eastern Brazil (in particular, the Pernambuco and Paraiba states), causing floods and triggering landslides that have resulted in fatalities, displacement, and damage.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports, as of 4 May, six fatalities and 9 540 people displaced across 27 municipalities in Pernambuco. In Paraíba, 600 people have been displaced across 13 municipalities and a total of 16 100 people have been affected.
Paraíba has further declared a state of emergency.
Over the next 48 hours, more moderate to heavy rainfall with local thunderstorms is still forecast over north-eastern Brazil. On 6 May, there is a yellow alert for heavy rainfall across the northeast.
