Brazil - Floods and landslides, update (Government of Sao Paulo, INMET, CEMADEN) (ECHO Daily Flash of 21 February 2023)

  • The number of casualties is increasing following heavy rainfall and consequent floods and landslides across São Paulo State.
  • According to local authorities, 40 people have died (39 in Sao Sebastiao City and one in Ubatuba City), 23 have been injured (including six seriously injured), and more than 2,400 have been displaced. In addition, several roads have been blocked, particularly in the Sao Sebastiao City area.
  • National authorities are providing help for those most affected.
  • On 21-22 February, moderate to heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms are forecast over the affected State. Very high hydrological and hydrogeological risk is still in effect across the north-eastern coastal areas of São Paulo State.
