Heavy rainfall has been affecting southern Brazil (in particular, Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of the country) over the past few days, causing floods, rivers to overflow and triggering landslides that have resulted in population displacement and damage.
Media report, as of 30 May, approximately 300 displaced families across the Sobradinho municipality, 22 displaced people in the Alegrete municipality, and seven displaced people in the Quaraí municipality due to floods. In addition, 40 houses were damaged across the Sao Borja municipality and one bridge collapsed in the Sao Vicente do Sul municipality, also in this case due to floods. Moreover, three displaced persons were reported in the Santa Cruz do Sul municipality due to a landslide.
Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over the eastern Rio Grande do Sul state.
