Botswana is experiencing a severe flooding emergency, resulting in extensive displacement, infrastructure damage, and the loss of lives.

Highlights:

  • Casualties: 7 deaths reported, primarily due to drowning. One child (10 years old) remains missing in Francistown; search and rescue efforts are ongoing.
  • Children Affected: 705 children displaced, with 537 in evacuation centers. Hardest-hit areas include Ghanzi (387 children), Tlokweng (53), and Francistown (72).
  • Evacuations: 2,994 people affected, with 1,749 housed in shelters.
  • Infrastructure Impact: Road closures and power outages disrupting mobility and essential services. Health clinics in Molapowabojang and Kanye are experiencing service disruptions.
  • Critical Risks: Heightened threat of waterborne diseases, water shortages, and food insecurity.
