Situation

1. The national emergency services have communicated to the UN- Resident Coordinator the aggregated requirements for the 18 affected districts and towns. The total number of people in need of immediate assistance is: 34,350, including 1,000 refugees.

2. The food requirements above also take into account the heavy crop losses in several districts, i.e. the affected rural population will have to await the next harvest season. The NDMO has indicated that food rations are very likely to be needed for more than one month. OCHA is in contact with the UN-RC on this subject.

International response

3. Germany: 500 family tents (7 pers. each), 3,000 blankets. Both contributions include air/land transport via Johannesburg. Value: 200,000 DM (105,000 US$)

4. OCHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions for the immediate relief needs. Funds channelled through OCHA will be spent in co-ordination with the relevant organizations of the UN system and OCHA will provide written confirmation of their use. Funds should be transferred to OCHA Account No. CO-590.160.1 SWIFT-code SBC0CHGG12A - at the UBS AG, PO Box 2770, CH-1211 Geneva 2, Switzerland, with reference: OCHA – Botswana - Floods 2000.

5. For co-ordination purposes, donors are requested to inform OCHA Geneva, as indicated below, of relief missions, pledges or contributions and their corresponding value by item.
