Agric ministry aware of looming drought

The Ministry of Agriculture is aware that severe drought is imminent as a result of low rainfall and continuous heat waves that affected the country throughout the ploughing season.

Acting Assistant Minister of Agriculture Mr Fidelis Molao stated in Parliament that as a result of this, government instituted drought assessment teams to carryout countrywide assessment.

A report from the teams is expected during the course of this month for consideration by government.

Therefore he said he was not in a position to indicate what measures would be approved and applied.

Mahalapye West MP, Mr Joseph Molefe, had asked him if he was aware that severe drought was imminent due to low rainfall and heat waves that affected the country.

He asked what government had considered as a subsidy and drought mitigating factors for farmers.

Mr Molefe further asked the acting assistant minister what was planned for low subsistence farmers who lost their crops due to the heat waves and dry spell. The acting assistant minister was also to state the time frame for the implementation of the planned intervention measures proposed. ENDS
