The worst floods since records began have hit Bosnia and Herzegovina, leaving 40 per cent of the country underwater. Around 600 orphans sponsored by Islamic Relief are known to be affected. We are mobilising an emergency response, including vital food aid, water and clothing.
As a State of Emergency is declared in parts of Bosnia and Serbia, Islamic Relief is responding to the worst floods in the country since records began.
Flooding has seen communities cut off by overflowing rivers. At least three people are so far been reported to have drowned. Landslides have buried homes and destroyed vital infrastructure.
The latest reports indicate that more than 40 per cent of Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently flooded – the worst flooding since records began 120 years ago. It is not yet known how many homes have been lost or how many thousands of families are without electricity, water and food.
Around 600 orphaned children sponsored by Islamic Relief are known to be in areas affected by the unfolding crisis, with strong winds and rain making rescue efforts particularly challenging.
Floodwaters have inundated suburbs around the country’s capital, with city centres including Sarajevo threatened by rising water levels.
Islamic Relief, which has been working in Bosnia and Herzegovina for over 20 years, is mobilising an emergency response. We plan to provide basic items such as water, food, clothing and power generators to meet the immediate needs of the most vulnerable families.
