Strasbourg, 19.09.2003 - Economic recovery and the return of refugees in South-East Europe is the theme of a forum organised by the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe in Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina on 22 and 23 September.

The 4th Forum of Cities and Regions of South-East Europe will be held at the Hotel Prijedor.

The meeting will focus on refugee return, looking at how local and regional authorities can act to make sure that their citizens can settle in new homes. It will also look at how authorities are coping with privatising state-owned companies and local services, and the way they are tackling corruption.

The forum will close with a round table on the development of partnerships and transfrontier co-operation between local and regional authorities.

Prijedor, Republika Srpska - 22-23 September 2003

Organised by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe (CLRAE), in the framework of the Stability Pact for South-Eastern Europe, in co-operation with the City of Prijedor, and the Foundation for the Economy and sustainable Development of the Regions of Europe (FEDRE)

Instigated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe, the Forum of Prijedor is organised as a follow-up to the previous Forums of Cities and Regions of South-East Europe held in Skopje (on 16-18 November 2000), in Istanbul (on 2 and 3 November 2001) and in Novi Sad (18-20 April 2002). The Forum of Prijedor pursues the following main objectives:

  • to examine the issue of sustainable return of refugees and displaced persons in South-East Europe and the role of local and regional authorities in this respect (action to be taken within a transfrontier framework), with as case study the City of Prijedor;

  • to analyse the positive and negative effects of privatisation in South-East Europe and notably the questions of fight against corruption and organised crime, development of proximity economy and promotion of employment;

  • to succeed in the establishment of concrete partnerships between cities and regions from South-East Europe and other European local and regional authorities; to which economic and civil society actors such as Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) could be associated.
