In a context of mixed movements, UNHCR works with the authorities to improve the early identification of those with protection needs, and to strengthen the asylum procedure.

UNHCR works with the authorities to resolve all known cases of statelessness. While significant progress has been made, a sustainable mechanism is needed to prevent future cases.

UNHCR has been present in BiH since the 1990s, and still supports the implementation of Annex VII of the Dayton Peace Agreement to address the protracted displacement situation.

2,303 people informed on asylum and international protection in BiH (as of Aug 2024)

Asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants arriving within mixed movements are usually unfamiliar with the national laws, language, etc. They may not be able to fully understand their rights and obligations in order to make an informed decision on applying for international protection. UNHCR and its NGO partner Vaša prava (Your Rights) BiH provide legal counselling on asylum and international protection in BiH.

146 new asylum applications in 2024

A sharp increase in the registration of asylum claims was noted so far this year. As of end-August 2024, the Ministry of Security had registered the claims of 146 people, which is 66% more than in the same period last year.
