Emergency grant aid for torrential rain disaster in the Republic of Bolivia

  1. As the damage from the torrential rain in Bolivia continues to expand, the Government of Japan has decided to extend emergency grant aid of about 200,000 dollars (about 22 million yen) to the Government of the Republic of Bolivia, which has been affected by the disaster. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to President Mr. Juan Evo Morales Ayma to provide emergency grant aid at the Japan-Bolivia Summit Meeting which was held on March 6 (Tue).

2. Since the end of last year, torrential rain in the Republic of Bolivia has been causing major damage from flooding. According to the Government of the Republic of Bolivia, the disaster has affected about 340,000 people, causing major human and material damage, such as roads around the country being cut off, and the disaster continues to expand. The Government of the Republic of Bolivia has therefore appealed again for emergency assistance from the international community, including Japan.

3. The Government of Japan provided emergency relief goods equivalent to about 12 million yen on February 9 in response to a request of the Government of the Republic of Bolivia.

4. With this emergency grant aid, Japan's assistance will now amount to 34 million yen in total.
