This situation report is based on information received from the Office of the Resident Coordinator, UN Agencies, the Bolivian Government, the UN Emergency Technical Team (UNETT) in Bolivia and OCHA Regional Office in Panama.
HIGHLIGHTS
Floods have now claimed 48 lives and affected 41,557 families (approximately 246,000 people).
The department of Beni is the most affected and the situation is likely to deteriorate in the next few days.
SITUATION OVERVIEW
1. Since November 2007, prolonged heavy rainfall in Bolivia has caused floods that have affected several communities in the eastern and northern regions of the country. The official figures, released by the Vice Ministry of Civil Defense, are 48 deaths, 5 missing and more than 41,557 families affected. Figures have risen steadily in the last days since floods have reached the department of Beni.

2. According to the latest hydrological analysis, the water levels in the main rivers of the Amazon Basin are expected to exceed levels reached in 2007 by 50 centimeters to 1 meter. Thus, the scenario is that floods will persist until the end of February or, at the latest, the beginning of April.
