BOLIVIA - CHAPARE RIVER FLOODS
INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
30 JANUARY 1987

1. FOLLOWING PROLONGED RAINSTORMS OVER THE PAST 10 DAYS, THE CHAPARE RIVER IN THE STATE OF COCHABAMBA OVERFLOWED ITS BANKS AFFECTING AN AREA OF 50,000 HA.

2. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS THAT THE NATIONAL CIVIL DEFENSE HAS CONFIRMED 250 HOUSES ARE AFFECTED RENDERING 750 PERSONS HOMELESS IN THE COMMUNITIES OF VILLA FATIMA, NUEVA ESPERANZA AND TOCOPILLA. UNCONFIRMED REPORTS SPEAK OF 12 DEAD, 5,000 FAMILIES ISOLATED AND 30,000 HA CROPS DESTROYED.

3. GOVERNMENT HAS SO FAR NOT REQUESTED INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
