Bolivia - Social unrest (DG ECHO, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 28 October 2024)

  • On 27 October, Bolivia’s former President Evo Morales claimed that shots were fired at his vehicle in an assassination attempt. Morales blamed President Arce's government for the outburst of violence ahead of next year’s elections.
  • The incident comes amid rising tensions marked by two weeks of roadblocks that have disrupted the supply of food and fuel nationwide, with security forces attempting to clear them. At least 44 protesters were arrested on 25 October when more than 1,700 police officers were deployed to dismantle the roadblocks.
  • Further unrest might unfold in a country that is recording dwindling gas production, depleted foreign currency reserves and rising inflation. The current crisis is deepening social inequalities, especially among the most vulnerable, such as Indigenous Peoples, who have very low incomes and do not have access to markets, thus exacerbating food insecurity.
