Operational Updates

School – Feeding programme:

  • WFP is actively following up on the procurement process for the National Integrated School Feeding Programme (PNASI), working directly with smallholder farmers and agricultural cooperatives. This includes rigorous checks on food safety and quality to ensure the highest standards are met.

Emergency

  • WFP has conducted capacity-strengthening training for local NGOs as part of the Cash Learning Partnership (CALP). The training sessions were attended by representatives from Caritas, Sian Son, CRS, Plan Benin, Havre Paix, and CARE, enhancing their capabilities in cash-based interventions.
  • WFP continues cash-based transfers, specifically the Top-up Nutrition program, targeting pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under two. This initiative aims to improve nutrition outcomes for these vulnerable groups by providing financial support to purchase nutritious foods.

Capacity Strengthening

  • WFP has launched an impact study on the use of improved cookstoves to evaluate their effects on energy consumption. This study aims to assess the benefits and potential energy savings from using these stoves in local communities.
  • WFP in collaboration with Abomey-Calavi University, has launched three main studies. These include feasibility studies for fortification of maize and rice, a nutrition study on the acceptability of fortified flour and grains for students, and an investigation into the feasibility of introducing meat-based proteins.
  • WFP has commenced community-based participatory planning in Alibori and Atacora. This exercise involves identifying community needs, tailoring responses to local contexts, and promoting local ownership to ensure effective and sustainable interventions.
  • There is an existing platform in Natitingou that has been strengthened to produce briquettes used for parboiling rice. WFP plans to organize an exchange visit and experience-sharing session at this platform.
  • WFP is finalizing a report on thermal retention bags and proposing solutions to the challenges identified by users, particularly regarding the inadequacy of kitchen utensils and the durability of the bags.
  • WFP is actively facilitating the handover of the School Feeding Programme to the Government. This includes training individuals, transferring technical expertise, and facilitating the transfer of assets and knowledge to build long-term capacity and self- sufficiency.
