Operational Updates

School – Feeding programme

  • As of March, the National Integrated School Feeding Programme (PNASI) is in operation at 5,702 out of 5,709 targeted schools, with canteens running in 5,698 schools, achieving a 99.9 percent operational rate.

  • Over 1.16 million school children are estimated to have received meals in the canteens from January until March.

  • The four schools formerly closed in the department of Alibori re-opened and will be provided with food to operate their canteens starting end of April to June 2024.

  • WFP commenced the provision of food for the third quarter to 5,469 schools amounting to 8,000 mt.

  • WFP Country Director and the Minister of Nursery and Primary Education participated in the commemoration of the 9th edition of the African School Feeding Day held in Burundi on 1 March 2024.

Emergency

  • WFP trained local actors on utilizing the nutrition response package in emergency response. Additionally, recommendations of the capitalization workshop were shared with the Government and a joint road map is now in place ready for implementation.

  • WFP is aiming to support over 25,500 new internally displaced people (IDPs), refugees and asylum seekers in the next three months.
