KEY DEVELOPMENTS

In Nicaragua, USAID/OFDA provided $300,000 on September 27, 2007 through USAID/Nicaragua to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) for livelihoods and capacity building in areas affected by Hurricane Felix. Also in FY 2007, USAID/OFDA provided an additional $45,000 for emergency preparedness supplies in Nicaragua.

In the Dominican Republic, USAID/OFDA has provided an additional $387,970 since November 8, 2007 to various organizations, including local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), for mosquito nets, other humanitarian commodities, and relief activities benefiting populations affected by Tropical Storm Noel in the Dominican Republic.

In response to Tropical Storm Noel, USAID/OFDA provided nearly $550,000 in additional funding to affected populations in Haiti since November 8, 2007. With $100,000 from USAID/OFDA, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is providing emergency relief supplies to populations in affected areas. Save the Children/United States (SC/US) is implementing protection programs for 800 internally displaced persons in Port- Au-Prince, with approximately $45,000 from USAID/OFDA. With a grant of more than $105,000, World Vision provided safe drinking water, rehabilitated water points, and distributed hygiene and kitchen sets, serving a total of 12,000 beneficiaries. USAID/OFDA provided nearly $150,000 to Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for agricultural tools, seeds, and plants, benefiting 400 people in affected areas. In addition, with a grant of $150,000, the World Concern Development Organization provided 1,950 beneficiaries with agricultural and livelihoods inputs and training.

CURRENT SITUATION

In 2007, USAID/OFDA responded to Hurricane Dean, Hurricane Felix, and Tropical Storm Noel, providing a total of more than $4.6 million to affected populations in Belize, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, and St. Lucia.

Working with USAID/OFDA, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) delivered food commodities and emergency relief supplies to affected populations, providing more than $3.3 million in assistance to individuals affected by the 2007 hurricane season.
