Cyclone Remal, which struck the southern coastal regions on 26 May, is the most devastating cyclone to hit Bangladesh in recent years. Nearly 5 million people across 19 districts in Khulna and Barishal divisions were affected. Eight of these districts – Pirojpur, Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Patuakhali, Barguna, Barishal, and Bhola – were worst hit.
The cyclone triggered tidal surges and torrential rains, breaching embankments, and causing flooding, saltwater intrusion, and damage to homes, crops, and infrastructure. Initial estimates suggest that damage to crops and agricultural land could result in losses of BDT 10,595 million (US$ 90.7 million). Nearly 900,000 people are in urgent need of assistance, with almost all facing food shortages and skipping meals.
The Government of Bangladesh is leading the response. While some initial needs have been met, significant gaps remain, and support from the international community is crucial.
