Highlights
- Chattogram and Sylhet Division face severe flooding due to active monsoons and significant rainfall, leading to rising rivers and worsening flood conditions in 11 districts. Major rivers in the southeast, including Gomti, Muhuri, and Halda, have risen significantly, with some flowing well above danger levels, exacerbating the flood situation.
- About 5 million people, including 2 million children, have been affected, with many stranded without food and relief. 20 deaths have been reported, and 284,888 people have sought refuge in 3,527 shelters, with rescue operations ongoing by government personnel and volunteers, though some areas remain inaccessible.
- 1,038 medical teams are providing support to the affected, but shortages of essential supplies such as ORS and IV fluids due to increased diarrhoeal cases have been reported. Over 7,000 educational institutions are closed, and many schools are being used as shelters or submerged, impacting children's education. Significant damage to tube wells, latrines has been reported, with power supply and road communication disrupted in several areas.
- UNICEF and its partners have reached a total of 338,436 people (172,602 female) through multi-sectoral flood response interventions in WASH, Child Protection, Nutrition, Education, HCT, SBC and Health.
- Up to 4,960 children under five have been screened for malnutrition, with 61 children with SAM identified. 45 were referred for treatment, while 36 were admitted to SAM corners.
- A total of 2,400 family kits and 3,100 dignity kits are currently being distributed across several districts, benefiting 12,700 people, including 7,947 females.
- UNICEF is collaborating with BBC Media Action to assist members of the Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) Working Group and the Inter-Cluster Coordination Group (ICCG) in disseminating key messages to the affected populations.
- UNICEF requires up to US$15.5 M for urgent life-saving multi-sectoral interventions for children, pregnant and lactating women impacted by the flash floods in Northern and South-eastern Bangladesh.
