Highlights

  • 2024 was a year of unprecedented challenges for Bangladesh, with a convergence of multiple crises. The country continues to host over 1 million Rohingya refugees in 33 crowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, with the situation exacerbated by a civil unrest in July 2024 that severely disrupted emergency response coordination. In addition, a series of devastating floods (including in areas that have not experienced foods in over 40 years) and a major cyclone impacted 18.4 million people, across 29 districts, leaving 6.4 million people, mostly women and children, in urgent need of assistance.
  • Compounding these challenges, public health emergencies such as acute watery diarrhea (AWD) affecting 1.8 million people (majority children), and a dengue outbreak strained already-burdened health systems.
  • Despite the scale and complexity of these crises, UNICEF reached 3.01 million people (95% of the HAC target), including 1.43 million children, 1.51 million females, and 394,841 Rohingya refugees, with integrated life-saving multi-sectoral interventions in WASH, Child Protection, Education, Health, and Nutrition.
  • Additionally, UNICEF played a critical role in strengthening sub-national structures for coordination of emergency response, including seconding a staff member to the UNRC to support the government in establishing area-based coordination structures, promoting effective communication and coordination between local government structures, humanitarian organizations, and field volunteers.
  • None of these achievements would have been possible without the support of our donors and partners. In 2024, UNICEF mobilized US$128.6 million (84% of HAC funding requirements), enabling a robust response to multiple crises and alleviating the suffering of children and families in Bangladesh. We sincerely thank our partners for their generosity and commitment.
