Highlights

  • By September 2024, a total of 18.4 million people have been impacted by cyclone Remal and recurrent floods, leaving an estimated 6.4 million in need of immediate assistance in 29 districts, which accounts for 45 per cent of the 64 total districts.
  • As of September 2024, nearly 46,465 new refugees have been recorded since the beginning of the year (source: UNHCR). Bangladesh continues to host over 1 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar in 33 camps in Cox’s Bazar District and Bhasan Char (35,629 refugees) in Noakhali District, 52 per cent of them children (56 per cent in Bhasan Char).
  • During the period under review, UNICEF has reached 1,88 million people (897,256 children, 948,633 females, 46,059 persons with disabilities), through multi-sectoral responses - WASH, Child protection, Education, Nutrition, Humanitarian Cash Transfers and Health interventions.
  • UNICEF seconded one staff to strengthen overall coordination and support the government in establishing area-based coordination structures in the flood affected districts of Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali and Lakshmipur.
  • UNICEF has supported 241,653 Rohingya children (115,928 girls) in Early Childhood Development, Early Childhood Education, Myanmar Curriculum, and Skills/Vocational Education and Training in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. This includes 223,487 children (106,633 girls) in the Myanmar Curriculum, where UNICEF is providing 89 per cent of formal education.
  • Overall, a funding gap of US$31 million (21 per cent of the Humanitarian Action for Children-2024) remains, restricting UNICEF’s ability to fully meet the priority needs of vulnerable girls, women, and people with disabilities.
