Highlights

  • Bangladesh continues to host 984,591 Rohingya refugees(4) from Myanmar in 33 camps in Cox’s Bazar District and Bhasan Char in Noakhali District, 52 per cent of them children (including 56 per cent of the population in Bhasan Char).
  • On May 26, 2024, tropical Cyclone Remal hit Bangladesh and severely impacted 4.6 million people across 19 districts, resulting in 18 deaths and 1.3 million people needing humanitarian assistance. The severe humanitarian situation has been exacerbated by monsoon floods in northern Bangladesh, impacting up to 14.8 million people (7.8 million women, 6.1 million children aged 0-19, and 205,130 people with disabilities) in 31 districts in the northern regions.
  • 807,926 people (409,285 female, 16,562 people with disabilities) have accessed a sufficient quantity and quality of water for drinking and domestic needs (110 per cent of the target), while 398,063 people (207,686 female, 3,410 persons with disabilities) have accessed appropriate sanitation services (84 per cent of the target) including families impacted by the floods, Cyclone Remal and Rohingya crisis.
  • 241,653 Rohingya children (115,928 girls) in Early Child Development (ECD)/ Early Child Education (ECE), Myanmar Curriculum (MC) and Skills/Vocational education and training (VET) supported by UNICEF in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char, including 223,487 children (106,633 girls) in the MC. UNICEF is providing 89 per cent of formal education through the MC.
  • Critical funding gaps remain across all sectors, with a funding gap of $55.8 M (37 per cent) restricting UNICEF’s ability to meet the priority needs of vulnerable girls, women, and persons with disabilities.
