  • Bangladesh has recently experienced a severe civil unrest, compounding the humanitarian crisis.
  • Cyclone Remal , which made landfall on May 26, 2024, impacted 4.6 million people across eight districts, resulting in 18 deaths and leaving 1.3 million in urgent need of assistance. in addition, floods in the northeast regions that begun from the 30th of May, have affected 3.74 million people, further endangering the well-being of millions, especially women and children.
  • Response efforts are being hindered by disrupted logistics, communication breakdowns, and coordination issues, leading to delays in delivering water and essential supplies such water purification tablets, education in emergency kits (EIE kits) and dignity kits.
  • The safety of humanitarian workers is at risk, further limiting their ability to assist, while increased anxiety, fear and mental stress have reduced attendance at awareness sessions and impacted health services seeking by communities.
  • In the Cyclone Remal response, UNICEF has reached up to 210,000 people (56,700 women, 98,700 children, and 5,880 people with disabilities) through multi-sectoral interventions.
  • In the monsoon-floods response, UNICEF has reached 263,800 flood-affected people (71,226 women, 123,986 children, and 7,386 people with disabilities) through a multi-sectoral interventions for the floods emergency.
  • Despite mobilizing up to US$3.67 million from donors to provide critical services for children, women, and persons with disabilities, UNICEF faces a significant funding gap of 81% towards the floods and cyclone emergencies, requiring approximately US$16.1 million to support immediate and medium-term interventions for the vulnerable women and children impacted by the floods and cyclone in Bangladesh.
