EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Kutupalong and Nayapara refugee camps are located in Cox’s Bazar District under Chittagong Division, located in the south east of Bangladesh, with about 32,958 refugees residing in the two camps. The refugees receive basic humanitarian assistance from UNHCR and partners. Action Against Hunger provides comprehensive nutrition interventions to prevent under nutrition and treat Acute Malnutrition.
Action Against Hunger implemented a Standardised Expanded Nutrition Survey (SENS) in Kutupalong and Nayapara refugee camps from 7 November 2016- 5 December 2016.

Objectives

The main objective of this survey was to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and to monitor progress of selected indicators in health, Infant Young Child Feeding (IYCF), anaemia, food security, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and mosquito net coverage.

Methodology

In each camp, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using simple random sampling. Two representative samples were drawn from each camp. Sample size for the two camps was estimated using ENA for SMART software (July 2015) following SENS guidelines (Version 1.3, March 2012). Sample size was determined by entering the estimated GAM rates, desired precision, design affect, average household size and non-response. The survey used ASUS tablets and Epi Info 7 software for data collection and entry, replacing paper questionnaires. A total of 4 teams were trained and collected data during the survey, each comprising of 4 members.
