IOM CONDUCTS ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGN IN COX’S BAZAR

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been operating a campaign in Cox’s Bazar for raising awareness on anti-bullying and hopefully reducing such incidents. IOM’s Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) unit is carrying out this campaign, especially for the children, adolescents, and young-adult groups who can frequently be targets of bullying.

As part of the campaign, anti-bullying sessions are generally conducted in the educational institutes of host communities and in the community centres and learning centres of Rohingya refugee communities. The MHPSS sta and volunteers who are trained in anti-bullying sessions usually provide this awareness-raising service for both refugee and host communities. During the reporting period, a total of 23 sessions took place with the participation of 308 persons.

Bullying is a growing phenomenon that puts the physical and mental health of children and adults at risk. It is something that can happen everywhere and to anyone, regardless of their gender, age and identity.
A 15-year-old adolescent beneciary shared in a group that “We used to emotionally bully one of our neighbours calling him bad names, we were even physically abusing him sometimes.
After attending this session, we realized how our actions made him feel. Hence, we will not do it again, and instead, we will try to be more empathetic with him and others as well”.
