Overview of Hazard Incidences in September 2023
In September 2023, Bangladesh encountered a total of 15 different hazard incidents which included Boat Capsize, Bridge Collapse, COVID-19, Dengue, Embankment Collapse, Fire Incident, Flood, Heatwave, Heavy Rainfall, Landslide, Lightning, Riverbank Erosion, Wall Collapse, Water Logging and Wild Animal Attack. Comparing September to August, there was a notable increase in the number of confirmed dengue cases and fatalities. The outbreak affected every district in Bangladesh, with 79,598 confirmed cases and 396 fatalities reported in September (DGHS). A total of 329 fire occurrences were reported, citing the daily hazard situation report from MoDMR (310) and the daily newspapers (19). Tragically, 12 people died and 28 people were injured as a result of these tragedies. In addition, 225 stores were damaged. The daily newspapers reported that seven lightning incidents were occurred, resulting in nine fatalities and one injury in several unions. Four boat capsize incidents occurred in different districts, four people were killed and one person was missing.
Waterlogging was noted in three districts (Dhaka, Satkhira, Narsingdi) around the nation in the month of September. In Mirpur, electrocution on a flooded road resulted in four fatalities and one injury. In September, there were 397 new confirmed COVID-19 cases recorded, along with two reported fatalities and 517 persons who were simultaneously recovering from the virus. Two fatalities and three injuries were reported for the wall collapse incident. One wild animal attack resulted in a fatality. In September, nine incidents of embankment collapse in seven areas were documented. The Sunamganj district experienced a bridge collapse incident. Six riverbank erosion occurrences were reported in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Khulna. In Rangamati district, one landslide was recorded in September. On 23rd September, there was occurred a flash flood incident in the Dinajpur district. During this month, Bogura experienced maximum temperature of 38.4 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, Sunamganj encountered most significant daily rainfall of the month, reaching 193 mm daily rainfall on September 15th.
