Overview of Hazard Incidences in June 2023
In June 2023, thirteen types of hazard incidents occurred across Bangladesh, including, Boat Capsized, Covid-19, Dengue, Embankment collapse, Fire, Heat Wave, Land Slide, Lightening, Nor ‘wester, Riverbank Erosion, Wall collapse, Waterlogging and Wild Animal Attacks. Based on the DGHS daily situation report, the confirmed cases and death of Dengue increased in June compared with May month and it is increasing drastically. In this month it spread about 59 Districts of Bangladesh and total confirmed cases were 5956 identified and 4916 were recovered where total death was 34 in June. According to the daily newspaper 24 Lightning incidents are recorded which resulted in the cause of death toll of 28 people and 4 cows died in different districts. On the other hand, some furniture was burned which resulted in a 40-thousand-taka BDT loss. With reference to the daily hazard situation report of MoDMR and DDM, the 488 fire incidents, twenty-three people died, three livestock died 69 people were injured, five houses, eleven shops, and several property damages were recorded such as many furniture, cloths, and other goods were burned, etc. The estimated losses were recorded as approximately 20 lakhs. The number of newly identified patients with Covid-19 has 3249 in June 2023. In this month 2585 people have recovered, and 16 death which indicates both the number of death and the confirmed cases have increased compared to May. Four incidents of Boat Capsized happened in different districts which caused total five people died, 15 people injured and missing 28 cows in different districts. However, total three people died because of three wall collapse incidents in different places. Three Wild Animal Attack events took place on several dates in June which resulted in one death and different resources damaged in different districts. On the other hand, one incident of Land Slide occurred at Ukhiya upazila in Cox’s Bazar where one Rohingya worker died. Based on different national dailies, Riverbank Erosion occurred in several districts of Bangladesh which resulted more than 293 houses, 50 trees and lots of land have been swept away by the river, 500 feet concrete road collapsed into the river due to the severe erosion and more than five thousand families were waterlogged.
In addition, waterlogging occurred in several districts of Bangladesh. As a result of the incident, 20 trees were uprooted on the road and schools, colleges, and hospitals were also affected. One incident of nor ‘wester took place in Gaibandha where two students were injured during the nor’ wester. An embankment of the river of kurigram collapsed where some low laying areas were inundated by water. Besides, the country has experienced a total of 2 different levels of heat wave throughout the country where mild to moderate, and extreme heat wave blowing. The maximum temperature was recorded at 41.6 degrees Celsius at Dinajpur.
