Flood death toll rises to 817 in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Sept 6, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Death toll from flood-related diarrhea, drowning, snakebite and respiratory diseases in Bangladesh rose to 817 with nine more deaths reported in 24 hours till 9:00 a.m. Thursday.

According to Food and Disaster Management Ministry, over 16 million people in 39 out of the country's 64 districts were affected by flood that also damaged about 66,000 houses completely and 920,000 others partially.

The flood also damaged crops on 630,000 hectares, 29000 kms of roads and over 8000 educational institutions either completely or partially.

A total of 1,400,512 people were affected by diarrhea so far across the country since the advent of flood on July 30, sources of health department said.

Meanwhile, rice, cash, grants for rebuilding houses and other goods, supplied by the government and the Food and Disaster Management Ministry, continued to be sent for the flood victims.
