Emergency aid to flood affected people in Asia

DanChurchAid has sent one million DKK to the relief work for the survivors of the floods in Asia, and more money is on its way.

More than 35 million people have been affected by the massive monsoon rain in South East Asia.

India, Bangladesh and Nepal are among the countries that have been hit the hardest by the subsequent massive floods.

Floods leave millions homeless

In some of the areas, the amount of rain is equivalent to, what they usually get over a period of two years. The massive monsoon rains have rendered millions of people homeless and have resulted in thousands of deaths.

In June DanChurchAid gave 400.000 DKK to our local partners in India, who have provided food, blankets, tarpaulins and clothes to the homeless people. A further 750.000 DKK is on the way to the relief work in the eastern provinces of India: West Bengali, Assam & Bihar.

Immediate distribution of emergency supplies

"Our partners have already started distributing the first consignment of emergency supplies, and at the same time they are forming a general overview of the needs for the local population, and focusing on how wee can increase the aid", functioning Relief Director in DanChurchAid Christer Lænkholm says.

The coordinator for the relief work in Asia, Jonas Nøddekær, is on his way to Bangladesh, where he will survey the situation, and decide how we can best support our local partners. The possibility of supplying aid for Nepal will also be looked into.

The news agency Reuters estimates that more than 35 million people have been affected by the flooding in India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

"These areas in Asia are accustomed to flooding, but the fact that it is happening now is extreme. There is an acute need for relief for these millions of people, who have lost everything they own in the swirling masses of this flood", Christer Lænkholm says.
