Cyclone "Bijli" crosses southeastern Bangladesh leaving 4 killed

DHAKA, Apr 18, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Four people were killed in separate incidents as cyclone "Bijli" Friday night crossed Bangladesh's Cox ' s Bazar district, 391 km southeast of capital Dhaka, local media reported Saturday.

Sources were quoted by private news agency UNB as saying Mohammad Ibrahim, 48, died of heart attack while going to take shelter in a cyclone center at Kutubdia Island at about 11 p.m. local time.

Besides, a five-month-old girl died in a stampede at about 8 p. m. when some cyclone-panicked people were hurriedly going to take shelter in a building.

In another incident, a four-year-old girl died instantly when a large tree collapsed on their thatched house at about 9 o'clock p. m. local time.

Private news agency Bdnews24.com reported on Saturday, a boy in Cox's Bazar was killed on the spot when a tree fell on him in the cyclone strike.

Cyclone "Bijli" is the first cyclone this year. It was weakened after landing in southeastern coast of Bangladesh.

Cyclone "Sidr" which devastated Bangladesh's southern and southwestern areas on Nov. 15, 2007 was one of the fiercest cyclones in the country. It claimed over 3,000 lives and affected millions of people.
