I. Introduction/Background
In collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh (GoB), and as approved by the Humanitarian Coordination Task Team (HCTT), all assessments in the early stages of a disaster should be conducted jointly.
This approach ensures the involvement of all relevant parties and a collective ownership of the findings. In this context, humanitarian stakeholders in Bangladesh crafted the Joint Needs Assessment (JNA) tools and methodologies. These were derived and adapted from the best practices of the multi-sectoral initial rapid assessment (MIRA).
With the establishment and official recognition of the NAWG, the Coordinated Needs Assessment has become more streamlined and has successfully overseen several assessments for both slow and rapid-onset disasters. These assessments are essential for strategizing humanitarian responses and allocating resources. It is imperative to continually update these assessment concepts in line with global standards. Additionally, there’s a need to define roles, address the changing focuses of various stakeholders, and ensure the DER assessment system is optimized.
Since its inception, the NAWG, founded under the HCTT, has bolstered the GoB’s endeavours and ensured that actions are complementary. As a member of the Inter-Cluster Coordination Working Group (ICCG) under the HCTT, the NAWG remains committed to coordinating needs assessments, always incorporating the most recent and effective practices
