I. Purpose and Roles
The Information Management Working Group (IMWG) in Bangladesh serves as a collaborative platform for information management. Comprising various clusters, working groups, government, and non-government entities to enhance nationally led initiatives in information management. The Information Management Working Group (IMWG) supports the Inter-Cluster Coordination Group (ICCG) and Humanitarian Coordination Task Team (HCTT) to strengthen information management coordination with all actors, across clusters, sectors, and areas of responsibility.
The UN General Assembly Resolution 59/2121 calls upon States, the United Nations and other relevant actors, as appropriate, to assist in addressing knowledge gaps in disaster management and risk reduction by identifying ways of improving systems and networks for the collection and analysis of information on disasters, vulnerability and risk to facilitate informed decision-making with a specific focus on data preparedness.
Within the framework of the Standing Orders on Disaster, 2019, the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh articulates its commitment to disaster management and calls for the formulation and implementation of the Guidelines for Disaster Information and Communication Management. In addition, the SOD call for the strengthening of the National Disaster Response Coordination Centre (NDRCC) for exchanging disaster-related information and coordination of disaster-related activities. This is in line with the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, 2015–2030.
The Statistics Act, 2013 of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh recognizes the necessity for making statistical activities expedited, integrated, target-oriented and preserved.
IMWG conducts analyses and develops tools, as appropriate, to support coherence and harmonization of reporting for the HCTT Nexus Strategy 2021-25, National Plan for Disaster Management (NPDM) and Area-Based Collaboration-Comprehensive Risk Management (ABC-CRM). The quality and timeliness of disaster specific impact analysis require three elements, namely: (1) managing information, (2) vulnerability indexing and (3) disaster impact modelling (geographical exposure).
The overall objective of the IMWG is to strengthen the quality of information for evidence-based, riskinformed, and effective humanitarian, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) action, through a coordinated approach that builds on relevant existing information systems.
