1. WEEKEND STORMS AFFECTED THE DISTRICT OF CHITTAGONG, THE DISTRICT OF MADARIPUR AND MOSTLY THE DISTRICT OF MUNSHIGANJ NEAR DHAKAR.

2. IN MUNSHIGANJ ALONE 50 PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN SEVERAL VILLAGES NEAR DHAKAR OUT OF A TOTAL OF 69 REPORTED CASES. THE DEATH TOLL MIGHT EXCEED 100 SINCE THE RESCUE TEAMS WERE UNABLE TO REACH AFFECTED AREAS DUE TO A GENERAL STRIKE IN THE COUNTRY. IN ADDITION 1500 WERE INJURED, 3500 HOUSES DAMAGED, POWER SUPPLIES AND TELEPHONE LINES WERE INTERRUPTED. IN MADARIPUR SOUTH OF DHAKA ANOTHER STORM KILLED 9 AND INJURED MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE AND AT THE COSTAL AREA OF COX'S BAZAR AND IN CHITTAGONG 10 WERE KILLED, TOO.

3. THE PRIME MINISTER HAS BEEN VISITING THE DISTRICT OF MUNSHIGANJ AND ORDERED IMMEDIATE HELP FOR THE SURVIVORS. NATIONAL RESCUE REACHED THE MUNSHIGANJ DISTRICT IN THE EVENING OF THE 9 APRIL.

4. DHA/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN DHAKA HAS BEEN CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THE FACTS.

5. NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE RECEIVED BY DHA-GENEVA.
