Heavy rainfall in Cherrapunji yesterday has caused Surma and Kushiyara rivers to swell worsening the flood situation in Sylhet and Moulvibazar, while conditions improved in other flood-hit districts. But river erosion took alarming with the recession of flood water in different districts of Bangladesh. The badly affected river erosion districts are Kurigram, Shariatpur, Chandpur, Faridpur, Gaibandha, Borguna and Bhola.
Approximately 195 families in Kurigram and 200 families in Shariatpur district became homeless during last 24 hours as erosion by the river Brahmaputra and Padma took a serious turn in the areas. The two rivers continued erosion forcing the villagers to leave their homesteads for safer places. Large number of river eroded homeless people is passing a miserable life under the open sky.
Everyday the Meghna river erosion is snatching fresh areas at Sadar upazila and Heimchar upazila in Chandpur district. Hundreds of erosion affected people are crying rather finding any options to protect that river erosion.
