Bangladesh – Severe Weather (ECHO, FFWC, NHCMC, NDRCC, BMD, Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 2 August 2016)

  • Severe monsoon flooding is affecting the country’s central and southern parts engulfing new areas while water has started to recede in some northern districts. According to the National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC) over 3.2 million people were affected in 16 districts. Over 250 000 houses have been fully or partially damaged and more than 25 000 people are displaced. According to National Health Crisis Management Center (NHCMC) since 25 July, 38 people (mostly minors) had drowned and four were killed from snake bites due to flooding.

  • According to NDRCC as of 01 August 2016, BDT 20 million cash and 5 905 MTs food/rice and dry foods were distributed in 19 districts. At least 622 medical teams were working in the affected areas. ECHO Partners and local NGOs have already initiated emergency response in some of the most affected districts.

  • According to Flood Forecast and Warning Centre (FFWC), 19 major rivers continue flowing above danger level. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) rain, thunder showers and gusty winds are likely to deteriorate the flood situation in different parts of the country.
