1. RAINSTORM AND HIGH TIDAL SURGE IN MID-MAY AFFECTED SOUTHERN PARTS OF BANGLADESH, ESPECIALLY DISTRICTS OF BHOLA, COX'SBAZAR, BAGERHAT, HATIYA, NOAKHALI, PATUAKHALI, AND CHITTAGONG.

2. NGO DISASTER FORUM, CHAIRED BY OXFAM, WAS HELD ON 28 MAY TO SHARE INFORMATION ON DAMAGE. ENTIRE COASTAL BELT IS NOW INUNDATED WITH SALINE WATER. ALMOST ALL PONDS ARE FILLED WITH SALINE WATER, AND FRESH DRINKING WATER IS LACKING. CROPS, LYING UNDER WATER, ARE ROTTING. MOST OF MUD EMBANKMENTS HAVE BEEN EITHER COMPLETELY OR PARTIALLY WASHED AWAY.

3. GOVT HAS NOT APPEALED FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE. HOWEVER, IMMEDIATE NEEDS ARE RECOGNIZED IN PROVIDING FRESH DRINKING WATER, DE-WATERING PONDS, AND REPAIRING EMBANKMENTS.

4. IN ABSENCE OF GOVT'S EMERGENCY DECLARATION, LOCAL NGO'S HAVE LITTLE ACCESS TO FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO ADDRESS THESE NEEDS. IFRC LAUNCHED ITS OWN APPEAL ON 24 MAY AND RELEASED CHF 200,000 (USD 175,439) FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE. UK GOVT IS CONTRIBUTING, THROUGH IFRC, PDS STLG 40,000 (USD 64,516).

5. RECENTLY, GOVT INFORMALLY REQUESTED NGO ASSISTANCE IN RELIEF AND REHABILITATION. MOST PRESSING ARE HEALTH RELATED PROBLEMS. DHA/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IS TO CONVENE A UNDMT (UN DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAM) MEETING TODAY, TO FACILITATE COOPERATION AND COORDINATION BETWEEN GOVT (MINISTRY OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND RELIEF) AND NGO'S.

6. DHA, THROUGH DHA/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE, CONTINUES TO MONITOR SITUATION.
