Bangladesh: Rainfall and river situation summary as on 26 Jun 2003

Warning Message

Due to very heavy rainfall over the part of the South Eastern Hill basin, the river Halda at Narayanhat and the Matamuhuri at Chiringa registered sharp rise and crossed danger level this morning. The heavy cloud concentration exists over this region. The flash flood situation and the localised rain fed flood in this region may deteriorate further. The situation in the Meghna basin may remain unchanged.

Rainfall

Light to moderate rainfall at few places with heavy fall at one or two places over the Brahmaputra & Ganges basins, Moderate to heavy fall at most places with very heavy fall at some places over the Meghna and the South Eastern Hill basin has been recorded during last 24 hours ending at 9 A.M today. Significant rainfall was experienced 311.0 mm at Narayanhat, 160.0 mm at Lama, 144.0 mm at Sylhet, 120.0 mm at Sunamganj, 111.7 mm at Bandarban, 105.0 mm at Lorergarh, 80.0 mm at Barguna and 70.3 mm at Panchagarh during the same period.

General River Condition

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna observed fall at the upstream. The Ganges-Padma also registered rise at upstream points. Other rivers in these two basins registered rise and fall. Most of the rivers in the Meghna basin observed fall while those in the South Eastern Hill basin observed rise. Out of 85 monitoring stations, 30 points recorded rise, 33 points recorded fall and 1 point remained steady during last 24 hours ending at 6-00 A.M. today. The details of the basin report are as follows:

Brahmaputra Basin

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna receded by 3 cm at Noonkhawa while it registered rise by 7 cm at Chilmari, 10 cm at Bahadurabad, 12 cm at Serajganj and by 6 cm at Aricha. The Dharla registered further rise by 14 cm at Kurigram. The Teesta observed fall by 3 cm at Dalia and by 31 cm at Kaunia. The Old Brahmaputra registered further fall by 4 cm each Jamalpur and Mymensingh. The Buriganga recorded slight fall at Dhaka and the Balu registered slight rise at Demra. The Lakhya also recorded slight rise at Narayanganj. The Turag at Mirpur fall by 5 cm. The Tongi Khal at Tongi registered 6 cm further rise. The Kaliganga recorded slight rise at Taraghat. All the rivers in this basin are flowing below their respective danger levels.

Ganges Basin

The Ganges-Padma observed further rise by 31 cm at Pankha, 30 cm at Rajshahi, 14 cm at Hardinge Bridge and slight fall at Goalondo and fall by 16 cm at Bhagyakul. The Karatoa registered fall by 27 cm at Panchagarh & 8 cm at Bogra while it recorded rise by 36 cm at Chakrahimpur. The Punarbhaba at Dinajpur recorded further rise by 25 cm. The Tangon at Thakurgaon recorded 28 cm fall. The Jamuneswari at Badarganj and the Upper Atrai at Bhusirbandar recorded fall by 5 cm & by 19 cm respectively. The little Jamuna at Naogaon observed further rise by 30 cm. The Gorai at Gorai Rly Bridge recorded rise by 10 cm and by 3 cm at Kamarkhali. The Kumar at Faridpur registered fall by 3 cm. The Arialkhan at Madaripur also registered fall by 3 cm. All the rivers in this basin are flowing below their respective danger levels.

Meghna Basin

The Surma registered rise by 11 cm at Kanaighat, 4 cm at Sylhet and by 19 cm at Sunamganj. The Kushiyara recorded rise by 12 cm each at Amalshid & Sheola while it recorded 5 cm at Sherpur. The river is still flowing 6 cm above danger level at Sherpur. The Manu recorded fall by 15 cm at Manu Rly Bridge and by 35 cm at Moulvi Bazar. The Khowai also registered further fall by 38 cm at Habiganj. The Bhugai at Nakuagaon receded further by 24 cm. The Jadukata at Lorergarh observed 56 cm rise. The Someswari registered fall by 11 cm at Durgapur. The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar registered slight rise. The Gumti at Comilla recorded further fall by 49 cm. All the rivers in this basin are flowing below their respective danger levels except the Kushiyara at Sherpur.

South Eastern Hill Basin

The Muhuri at Parshuram recorded fall by 3 cm. The Halda marked sharp rise by 431 cm at Narayanhat and crossed danger level flowing 217 cm above danger level this morning. The Sangu registered 74 cm rise at Dohazari. The Matamuhuri marked sharp rise by 390 cm at Lama & by 205 cm at Chiringa and the river crossed danger level at Chiringa flowing 16 cm above danger level this morning. The Feni registered 17 cm fall at Ramgarh. All the rivers in this basin are flowing below their respective danger levels except the river Halda at Narayanhat and the Matamuhuri at Chiringa.
