Bangladesh: Rainfall and river situation summary as on 13 Sep 2004

OUTLOOK

Due to excessive rainfall over the South, South-east and central part of the country, rain-fed urban flooding situation prevails in the capital city Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Barisal, Faridpur, Comilla, Bhairab Bazar, Noakhali and Feni.

RAINFALL

Heavy to very heavy rainfall at most places over the south, south-east and central part of the country has been recorded during the last 24 hours ended at 9.00 am today. Significant rainfall was recorded 297.0 mm at Khulna, 201.0 mm at Narayanhat, 178.0 mm at Parshuram, 165.5 mm at Comilla, 164.0 mm at Panchpukuria, 156.0 mm at Dhaka and 145.0 mm at Chandpur during the same period.

GENERAL RIVER CONDITION

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna receded further at upstream points. The Ganges-Padma also observed further fall at upstream. The rivers in the Meghna basin registered rise & fall. Most of the rivers in the South Eastern Hill basin recorded sharp rise. Out of 86 monitoring stations, 39 points recorded rise, 22 points observed fall and 1 point remained steady. Among them 5 points are flowing above danger level this morning. The detail of the basin report is as follows:

BRAHMAPUTRA BASIN

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna observed fall by 19 cm at Noonkhawa, 14 cm at Chilmari, 21 cm at Bahadurabad while it recorded rise by 10 cm at Aricha. The Dharla marked fall by 28 cm at Kurigram. The Teesta recorded rise by 2 cm at Dalia while it receded by 3 cm at Kaunia. The Old Brahmaputra recorded rise by 12 cm at Jamalpur and by 8 cm at Mymensingh. The Buriganga recorded further rise by 20 cm at Dhaka. The Lakhya registered rise by 23 cm at Narayanganj. The Turag at Mirpur, the Tongi Khal at Tongi and Kaliganga at Taraghat recorded further rise. The at Dhaleswari recorded rise by 19 cm at Jagir and by 16 cm at Rekabi Bazar.

GANGES BASIN

The Ganges-Padma obserbed further fall by 10 cm at Pankha, 5 cm at Rajshahi, 3 cm at Hardinge Bridge while it recorded rise by 12 cm at Goalundo and by 22 cm at Bhagyakul. The Karatoa at Panchagarh registered fall by 16 cm. The Punarbhaba at Dinajpur also marked fall by 115 cm. The Little Jamuna observed rise by 15 cm at Noagaon. The Atrai recorded fall by 69 cm at Mohadevpur. All the rivers in this basin are flowing below their respective danger levels.

MEGHNA BASIN

The Surma registered further fall by 6 cm at Sylhet, 4 cm at Sunamganj while it rose by 1 cm at Kanaighat and is flowing above danger level by 29 cm at Kanaighat. The Kushiyara recorded fall by 18 cm at Amalshid. The Manu observed fall by 20 cm at Moulvi Bazar. The Khowai marked sharp rise by 187 cm at Ballah, 25 cm at Habigonj and is flowing 156 cm above danger level at Ballah. The Dhalai registered sharp rise by 151 cm at Kamalganj and is flowing 224 cm above danger level. The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar observed rise by 21 cm. The Gumti observed rise by 198 cm at Comilla and by 106 cm at Debiddar.

SOUTH EASTERN HILL BASIN

The Muhuri marked sharp rise by 380 cm at Parshuram and is flowing 100 cm above danger level. The Halda also observed rise by 335 cm at Narayanhat and by 238 cm at Panchpukuria and is flowing 55 cm above danger level at Narayanhat. The Sangu marked sharp rise by 240 cm at Bandarban and by 148 cm at Dohazari. The Matamuhuri observed rise by 121 cm at Lama and by 95 cm at Chiringa. The river Feni recorded rise by 268 cm at Ramgarh.
